The Greening
We've huddled under the Red Sand so long.
Soon, they say, that will change.
Down in the valley where the red brick and sand meet,
Looking for all the world like old stone Egypt in dried blood,
Or the old Earth Pueblo's in deep sunset.
We live under the world, like the epitome of ancient legends.
Dwarven cities of deep running red brick for our people.
They've been out in the Oort Cloud, stealing comets.
Dropping Ice Balls on the other side of the world in fantastic numbers.
All that water ice bombing the ancient Red Desert like Titans' rain.
The thin air isn't as thin as it used to be, back when the Tin Cans came.
The ancestors that packed into them like sardines, some Earth thing.
I had sardines in a can once, all the way from the Blue Marble.
All the hydroponics and lights under red brick.
I know what green is, they grow it everywhere under the Red.
Say it eases the air factory's load quite a bit.
Me, I'm just grateful for more than one color.
Soon, the old Red Desert's gonna see some blue!
All that water ice they've been droppin', gonna go see.
They say the Red Sky is about thick enough to plant soon.
Just real hardy stuff, engineered mosses, lichens, jack trees.
Bet the Sardines never thought it'd happen,
When they came over in the Tin Cans.
You go Up 'n Out nowadays, they got multi-mile Rocks.
You ride inside a whole world movin', all the room you want.
Yeah, I'm going to the other side after the Ice Balls fall.
I'm gonna wash my suit clean.
Imagine all that water, just to clean.
Most of all, I want to see when they plant.
Yep, I'm gonna see The Greening.
