The Leading Edge:
This poem speaks of and to art,
Giving form to the formless?
Locking a definition of what is poetry into a given form,
Rigid, un-daring, stagnated style sameness.
Art is not this thing.
Art is open, questing, provoking the mind and spirit.
Art is newness, something never before seen,
Pulled from the distant reaches of a mental universe,
Ripped screaming for attention from the depths of a soul,
Birthed in pain and joy upon pages without form,
Given form in infancy by the birthing parent,
Poet, writer, painter, craftsperson, tinkerer.
Define it, conform it, structural design it,
There you can surely find beauty and taste,
Golden words and comforting style.
Beautiful knock-offs, even so worth time.
This is not wrongness, this just is.
Enjoy......conformed poetry. It's pretty and nice.
Enjoy......writing in a comfortable style. I do.
Enjoy......borrowing from the strength of the pack.
Enjoy......exerting your individuality in content, not form.
But the masterpieces, the greats, the generational inspirations,
These will never follow.
They enjoy the leading edge.

Author's Comments
Some thoughts on the differences between poetry
in general, and leading edge art. This is what I see,
this is what I hear, and this feels right. True art is not
seen before the artist creates it, and when it is first seen,
one always wishes: "I wish I had made that!"
