Sailing Orion:

Deep in the blackness,
Under a dark desert sky,
I had a dream in new Mexico,
Out with a friend late at night,
You see it's so dark there,
The Milky Way washes across the sky,
Should have named it the Veil Of Diamonds,
Go out where it's dark & look up,
You'll know instantly why.
When I was in high school,
I took astronomy,
We went up to the telescope,
At the university,
And there on a few winter nights,
The astronomer let us see,
The rings and moons of Saturn,
And the nebula in Orion's belt,
And I don't know if I can explain,
But the sight of those distant stars,
Will be ever etched upon my brain,
And someday I'll build a UFO,
And fly way up into the sky,
I'll be a star pilot,
With a twinkle in my eye,
And I'll set a solar sail,
Coupled to an ion stream,
And I'll sail the star fields of Orion,
In my future dream.

I know I'm way ahead of the time,
Unfortunately. So many of us in my age group
thought we'd be so much closer to the stars by now,
But the politics just don't work that way.
By the way - the daydream & the telescope tours date back
to the late 1970's & 1980-81. Over twenty years, and those
stars are still twinkling so far away.
